Maglehøjene – Ancient Burial Mounds with a View of the Kattegat
South of Rågeleje, you will find one of Zealand’s most impressive groups of burial mounds – Maglehøje. Here, you can experience the Bronze Age landscape, explore history, and enjoy stunning views reaching all the way to the Kattegat and even Sweden on clear days.
Step Back into the Bronze Age
Maglehøje consists of protected burial mounds that offer a unique insight into the past. Originally, there were more, but many have been ploughed over time. An excavation in 1890 revealed an oak coffin, bones, and fragments of a bronze neck ring, once worn by women in the Bronze Age.
Two of the mounds are particularly large, measuring 26 and 33 meters in diameter and standing 7 meters high. From the top, you can take in breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Take a Break at Café Havestuen
Right next to Maglehøje, you’ll find the charming Café Havestuen, where you can enjoy freshly baked sourdough rolls, a great cup of coffee, or a glass of wine. The café focuses on organic and locally sourced ingredients.
Walking Route Among the Burial Mounds
A collaboration between Gribskov Municipality, local landowners, and Museum Nordsjælland has created a 1.3 km walking trail leading you through the burial mounds. Informative signs provide insight into the Bronze Age in both Danish and English. Picnic tables and benches make it a perfect family-friendly outing.
Note: Dogs are not allowed inside the fenced area due to grazing animals.
