Guided City Walk in Frederiksværk: Canals, Gunpowder, and Cannons

Dive into Frederiksværk’s fascinating history on a guided city walk, taking place on the same day as the Gunpowder Festival. Get up close to the city’s canals and learn about the production of gunpowder, bullets, and cannons in Denmark’s first industrial city.

The Importance of Water Power

Frederiksværk was founded in the 18th century when the canal between Lake Arresø and the fjord was excavated from 1717 to 1719. This canal enabled the use of water power, which laid the foundation for one of Denmark’s first industrial revolutions. During the walk, you’ll gain insight into how the city overcame drifting sands and transformed into an industrial hub.

A City with a Rich Industrial Heritage

Over the years, Frederiksværk became home to several significant industries, including agate polishing, gunpowder production, cannon foundries, and ironworks. The city’s history also features prominent industrial landmarks such as De Forenede Jernstøberier (The United Iron Foundries) and Det Danske Stålvalseværk (The Danish Steel Rolling Mill), cementing Frederiksværk’s role as one of Denmark’s most important industrial towns.

Traces of J.F. Classen

During the tour, you’ll also discover traces of Frederiksværk’s founder, J.F. Classen. His vision and foresight for the city are still evident today, and you’ll learn about his significant role in shaping Frederiksværk into an industrial centre.
