Forget me not - Special exhibition at Frederiksborg Castle

"Forget me not" is a touching exhibition that highlights life and death masks from Frederiksborg's collection. These precise facial casts, including those of well-known Danish figures, preserve each unique feature and invite reflection on life, death, and our relationship with portraiture.

Step into a world where time stands still, where moments are preserved, and the people we love are made immortal.

"Forget me not" is a captivating and emotional exhibition that highlights Frederiksborg's impressive collection of life and death masks.

Throughout European art and cultural history, life and death masks—casts made directly from the face—have been created to preserve the memory of those who mattered to us. These masks remain as precise testimonies of the unique facial features of individuals and as sensory, mysterious traces of those who once lived.

The exhibition showcases masks of some of the most famous Danish figures, including Karen Blixen, Bertel Thorvaldsen, Holger Drachmann, and Johannes V. Jensen. Every wrinkle, fold, and line—some even preserving eyelashes or facial hair—has been meticulously captured in the casts, which stand sensory and vividly before us.

The masks are presented alongside a collection of paintings, drawings, busts, contemporary art, and wax sculptures, all exploring our relationship with the body, life, death, loss, the face, and portraiture.
