Explore North Zealand's hidden gems on Bike Route 703

Experience North Zealand from the saddle with Cycle Route 703, a 48-kilometre route connecting Helsinge, Græsted, and Gilleleje station towns. This route offers a unique combination of scenic landscapes and historical sites.

Ride through open landscapes, past ancient burial mounds, and along the coast in Søren Kierkegaard's footsteps. Along the way, you can stop in charming towns, visit cultural highlights, and enjoy local cuisine. Here, you'll find an overview of the route and the many exciting highlights that await you. There are also plenty of opportunities for detours into the National Park of Royal North Zealand, such as to Esrum Abbey and the parforce hunting landscape in Gribskov.

Græsted

Græsted is known for the Græsted Veteran Rally, an annual event showcasing vintage vehicles and machinery. The North Zealand Vintage Train also operates from Græsted Station. The town has several old buildings and a charming village church worth visiting. Its history and traditional architecture create a cosy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing break.

Søborg Lake

On the new part of the cycle route, you can ride along the restored Søborg Lake, an ambitious project to recreate the lake drained in the 19th century to create more agricultural land. The project aims to restore the natural ecosystem and improve biodiversity in the area.

Gilleleje

Gilleleje is known for its active fishing harbor, beautiful beaches, and cozy town center. Here you can enjoy freshly caught fish at one of the local restaurants or take a stroll along the harbour and experience the maritime atmosphere. Gilleleje also has a cultural centre and several galleries where you can meet local artists.

Rågeleje

In Rågeleje, you come close to the coast and can cycle along the iconic striped beach huts. Here you can also refuel with ice cream and lunch. Take a detour from Rågeleje and hike in the heights of Heatherhill's landscape.

Maglehøjene

Maglehøjene near Rågeleje is a collection of ten significant burial mounds from the Bronze Age, testifying to the area's importance in prehistoric times. A 1.3 km footpath guides you around the area. From the mounds, you have a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape and out towards Kattegat.

Valby Hegn

The long barrows in Valby Hegn are an important part of Denmark's prehistoric heritage. These ancient burial monuments date back to the Neolithic period (about 3500-2800 BC) and are among the oldest man-made structures in the country. The long barrows are aligned in a row and are impressive not only because of their age but also because of their size and complexity.

Helsinge

Helsinge is a lively market town with a cosy centre filled with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Before continuing on the route, you can visit the town square, which often hosts markets and local events.
