The Artist Colony Season 5: An Artistic Journey in North Zealand

The upcoming season of DR’s popular series The Artist Colony draws inspiration from the scenic landscapes of North Zealand, with filming centered around Hornbæk and Nivå. The artists lived in Hornbæk while their studios were set up in Nivå. The creative journey culminated in a televised vernissage at Nivaagaard Collection, where six prominent contemporary artists left their mark on the local art scene.

The Artist Colony – A Modern Tradition

Now in its fifth season, The Artist Colony brings together six renowned Danish artists at a historic and inspiring location each year. The concept revives the classic idea of artist colonies: a collaborative space where artists have historically drawn inspiration from one another and their surroundings. After two weeks of intense work, the artists present the creations they developed during their stay.

Following in the Footsteps of Past Masters

This season invites contemporary artists – Apolonia Sokol, Kasper Eistrup, Nina Saunders, Jeanette Ehlers, Noah Umur Kanber, and Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen – to Hornbæk, a place that has previously inspired icons like P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann, Viggo Johansen, and Rudolph Tegner. Surrounded by North Zealand’s picturesque landscapes and artistic heritage, the six participants have crafted works that both honor and renew the tradition.

Premiere and Exhibition

The new season will premiere in December on DR and DR TV, offering audiences a unique glimpse into the artists’ creative processes and shared experiences. Starting January 10, Nivaagaard Collection will host a special exhibition, showcasing the works from The Artist Colony Season 5 alongside the museum's permanent collection. An experience that brings the magic of the series to life.
