Ocean - Exhibition at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

"OCEAN" at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art of Modern Art invites you on a journey above and below the ocean's surface, where art and science converge to explore the depths of the sea and its role as both a source of adventure and a resource.

Embark on a journey beneath the ocean's surface, where dreams and nightmares, longing and fear, beauty and horror converge.

This is the major event of the season at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, where art and science come together to explore the sea, which covers more than 70% of our planet.

The exhibition delves into the depths where imagination meets reality, showing how the sea has been a source of adventure and destruction throughout history. Like all life, we humans originate from the sea, which is no longer just a reservoir for tales of gods, monsters, and adventures, but also a resource we have exploited.

"OCEAN" is a thematic exhibition that fills the entire South Wing of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and is divided into three main themes:

  • The Sea Between Art and Science - This section explores the intersection of aesthetics and science through works like Anna Atkins’ cyanotypes of seaweed and Emilija Škarnulytė’s art film from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.

  • The Sublime and Mythological Sea - This theme focuses on the emotions and ideas that arise in art when humanity confronts the unknown depths of the ocean, from ancient gods and heroes to visions of strange monsters in Japanese woodcuts.

  • The Anthropocene Sea - This theme examines humanity's exploitation of the sea, which is seen as a transportation route and a stage for destroying cultures and environments.

The exhibition features works by a wide range of artists, including John Akomfrah, El Anatsui, Anna Atkins, Nina Beier, Caspar David Friedrich, Ellen Gallagher, Susan Hiller, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jean Painlevé, Allan Sekula, Emilija Škarnulytė, August Strindberg, and Wolfgang Tillmans, offering a unique insight into how the sea has influenced our culture and imagination over time.
